Enjoy family fun on National Take Your Parents to the Playground Day
Show this to kids! The third Sunday in May, falling on May 20 this year, is National Take Your Parents to the Playground Day.
The most important job that kids have is to play, and this day invites kids to show their parents how hard they work at having fun. As the founders of this day state, “Outdoor play offers the obvious benefit of physical activity, helping to build strong muscles and bones. It also engages the child’s imagination, which contributes to developing creativity and self-confidence.”
Playing with others also builds focus, attention, and leadership and negotiation skills. In sum, “the more children play, the healthier, smarter and happier they are.”
Take Your Parents to the Playground Day follows Children & Nature Awareness Month, created by the Children & Nature Network (C&NN) to call attention to the importance of regular play in natural outdoor settings.
C&NN notes improved academic outcomes for children who spend more time outdoors in nature. Kids have increased enthusiasm for learning, and demonstrate greater engagement in school. The group reports that spending time in nature can also boost kids’ performance in reading, writing, math, science and social studies.
At Hollyhock, kids can take their parents to two fun playgrounds at Fields House and Dandelion Park. They can extend the adventure by flying a kite or playing a game of catch in Fields Park, and they can explore miles of trails throughout the community. Next door to Hollyhock, the future site of Frisco’s Northwest Community Park offers more than 200 acres of green space and miles of mountain bike trails.
