Empanadas made by La Gran Empanada

La Gran Empanada is a grand success for Hollyhock’s Zelaya family

After moving to Hollyhock from Maryland last year, Carlos and Maria Zelaya launched their new food business, La Gran Empanada, along with Maria’s brother and sister-in-law.

Before you can say dulce de leche, their sweet and savory Latin turnovers started getting rave reviews from customers at the Frisco Fresh Market. Then everything shut down with the coronavirus pandemic.

The Zelayas quickly adapted, moving to contactless local delivery for empanadas by the dozen. Delivery is offered seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., for Frisco, Aubrey, Savannah, Little Elm and Prosper.

They have also started curbside pickup at Frisco Fresh Market, for online orders only. The empanadas are made daily at a commercial kitchen in McKinney.

Savory varieties include beef, chicken, ham and cheese, and veggie. The biggest seller is the breakfast empanada, filled with eggs, cheese and chorizo. Two kinds of salsas are offered, including chimichurri and Chef Carlos’ secret green sauce.

Sweet flavors include dulce de leche and guayaba with cheese.

The Zelayas look forward to expanding their full-service catering business and offering their empanadas in stores once the economy opens up more, but for now they love sharing their empanadas.

“We take pride in using only the finest ingredients for our empanadas. We didn’t know if people were going to accept our empanadas, but the response has been fantastic,” Maria says.
